We were talking with one of our wonderful contractors recently and, of course, the topic of Alexandria foreclosures came up. I hear yeah, “so what else is new”….well, have you checked to see if your real estate taxes have been paid by your lender?
Here is the story – our contractor, let’s call him Joe, was at home when he had a visitor….a County Sheriff….serving a judgment for taxes that had not been paid for several years on a rental property! It just so happens that this property was financed by WaMu! Joe has always paid his mortgage on time. He never received notices that the taxes were delinquent…they were sent to WaMu! If Joe had not been home, the County would have booted Joe’s most valuable vehicle(s) to cover the debt. Fortunately Joe was just served the notice and is taking care of the issue.
Bottom line – things are not always as they seem…if your lender pays your escrows, verify your taxes and insurance are paid.

One last thing – Remember Your Pets
Fairfax County Police issued this reminder for all of those pet owners out there:
Police Warn: Fireworks Scare Pets
The Fairfax County Animal Services Division urges pet owners to act responsibly and leave their pets at home and away from the loud commotion of firework celebrations taking place this holiday weekend.
Even pets that are accustomed to being with their owners and crowds can become frightened and disoriented with the high noise levels. According to Animal Control Supervisor Mary Zambrano, the police department sees an increase in dog and cat bites, stray dog pickups, and numerous calls about dogs running-at-large over the July 4th weekend each year. “We hope pet-owners will be considerate and cautious this holiday weekend,” said Zambrano.
Police offer pet owners the following tips to lessen the stress on their pets:
· When you leave your pet at home during the fireworks celebrations, make sure to leave your pet in an area of your home where he is safe, comfortable and sheltered from outside noise and lights.
· When scared, animals can become destructive so make sure to remove anything that can become damaged or might harm your pet if chewed.
· Never leave pets outside and unattended. It is not uncommon for pets to bolt over fences or otherwise escape a yard, even if they have never done it before.
Make sure your pet is wearing identification. If your pet gets lost or runs away, a name tag will ensure a quicker reunion.”
We wish all of you a wonderful 4th – be safe and remember our Troops!
